Art in Long Beach

On October 9th 2017, the skies over Long Beach, CA had an eerie orange glow from the wild fires burning in the area, and ash was falling from the sky on the roads and parked cars like snow.

This image of the Art Theatre in Long Beach, was captured on that day.

The theatre started in 1925 as a single screen silent movie house. The building, which has a long history of survival and reconstruction, survived an earthquake in 1933, after which the façade was recreated in the art deco style (one of my favorite architectural design styles).

Serving as a non-profit center for the City of Long Beach cinema, the theater shows first run and small independent films in an iconic historic setting.

On a recent walk through Long Beach, on a bright sunny day, I captured a companion daytime piece, ‘Art in Long Beach – Daytime‘ to this photo.
