New York Harbor, situated between New Jersey and New York, is home to Ellis Island, which was the busiest immigrant inspection and processing station in the United States, between 1892 and 1954. The island is adjacent to the famous Statue of Liberty, who welcomed immigrants with her liberty torch raised up high. There buildings on the island, which is now a national monument and museum, are rich in historic architectural detail. However, something I found particularly fascinating, was the corner edge of the main building, the detail of which I zoomed in on. It actually has a very modern look, despite…

Everyone who visits New York City has at one time or another been inside Grand Central Terminal. Just off the main concourse, you can find these incredible golden light fixtures, which, when illuminated, give the feel of magnificent and intricate crowns. They are in fact acorn shaped, a nod to the Vanderbilt family symbol, Cornelius Vanderbilt being the railroad owner who commissioned the original Grand Central Terminal. Through years beset by accidents, pollution and big traffic increases, the building was revised and replaced a number of times, until the building we now know, was completed in 1913.

This image is of a balustrade in Casa Batlló in Barcelona, one of the most recognizable of Antoni Gaudi’s buildings. His architecture extended to more than just the major structure, since he methodically designed every small and large detail in his buildings. In this masterpiece, known locally as Casa dels ossos (House of Bones) it’s hard to find any straight lines, just organic curved lines abounding, with even the balconies having a skull-like appearance. DeWaterkant neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa, is home to many brightly colored and beautiful homes, like this totally turquoise one. The neighborhood sits on a steep hillside in the shadow of Lion’s Head and Table Mountain, and overlooks the old Harbor in Cape Town. I usually tend towards perfect symmetry in photos. However, since the home’s windows were not directly above one another, having it slightly off center and balanced on the right by the tree, this composition felt right.

Many buildings in Santa Fe are built in the distinctive Adobe style, and the dramatic graphic contrast between the plant in the foreground and the structure behind created a beautiful and bold composition. I loved the simple color palette of the plant, building and sky combination.

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a really charming city, which still has a largely sleepy adobe feel to the architecture. This building was very typical of many there, with a familiar brown painted exterior, brightened up by the splash of color in the geraniums outside.

Everywhere you look on the island of Murano, Venice, in Italy, is bright, colorful, and postcard perfect. Instead of the typical photo, I decided to look closer at the details and simplicity of the town, creating a much more satisfying result than the everyday Murano image.

The doors of Santa Cruz de la Canada Mission in New Mexico are beautifully dramatic in their bold simplicity. We spotted the mission when on our way through to Taos, near Santa Fe.
