Batlló Backbone
This image is of a balustrade in Casa Batlló in Barcelona, one of the most recognizable of Antoni Gaudi’s buildings. His architecture extended to more than just the major structure, since he methodically designed every small and large detail in his buildings.
In this masterpiece, known locally as Casa dels ossos (House of Bones) it’s hard to find any straight lines, just organic curved lines abounding, with even the balconies having a skull-like appearance. Commonly accepted theory is that the building depicts St George’s slaying of the dragon, represented by the cross and the spine-and-scale dragon-like roof.
The balustrade in the image has a vertibrae-like feel, further accentuating that concept.
