Gotham’s Spine
One of the most fascinating recent structures in New York City is undoubtedly the Oculus transit hub. It’s a bird-like building above ground, underpinned by skeletal ribs below the surface.
Santiago Calatrava, the renowned Spanish architect, created a truly memorable statement structure to replace the original hub which was destroyed in the 9-11 attacks.
This photo shows the roof of the concourse above the subway connection from Manhattan to New Jersey across the Hudson River, and feels like the rib cage of the large bird swooping above.
