Venting The Fort
This image shows the large window wall of Castle Williams on Governor’s Island in the New York City harbor, completed in 1812.
This building served a number of purposes over the years, including being a barracks for the garrison at the time, and even prison at one point. The image shows a 1948 addition to the interior courtyard of the fort, with this brick and 3 story glass walled staircase giving a factory or industrial appearance. After being decommissioned as a prison, this structure has served many civilian and community roles, and also serves as a museum.
It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
