Lit From Above

These unique glass elements on many New York City sidewalks, are known as vault lights. They were first introduced in the 1840’s, to allow sunlight to filter into basement factories below the sidewalks in the SoHo and TriBeCa neighborhoods.

Many still exist in the city, in a number of areas, since they are protected by lengthy review processes to have them removed. They are so iconic, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to remove them!
